We enjoyed the cave tour, but be aware there are over 600 stairs in this tour. The guide (I think her name was Linda) gave some great information before the tour began. However, we couldn't hear her for much of the tour. The info we did get was great. Also be aware there is one part where you bump your head if someone doesn't warn you. My husband and I both hit ours. The bridge was awesome , and so were the domes. I would recommend this tour, but take a flashlight..

Amazing and unique experience! I've been in many caves, the exploring tour led by guide Aaron is a one of a kind event. One part of the tour showed the result of recent flooding and a walkway that had been improved with significant investment in the last several years. The other part of the tour was exploring and wet. Saw some crayfish that exists only in this cave. I highly recommend you wear some old clothes and take the long tour!

This was an incredible Cave experience and I highly recommend it. This was a highlight of our trip to Kentucky. We were lucky enough that there was some recent rain, but not too much - so the cave was partially flooded. The staff had us don rain boots and trek on through. It really added to the 'wildness' of the experience. The cave itself is large and makes for a really enjoyable tour seeing the sights, feeling the cool air, and listening to the tour. Our tour guide was excellent and made sure it was a safe and enjoyable experience. Another highlight for me was the suspension bridge, the largest in any cave. It really gave us a 'Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom' vibe! We visited three caves during our trip and this one was by far our favorite - for me, my wife and my stepson. Even if you have to go a little out of the way, I recommend visiting this gem. Happy Caving!

Was amazing. Giant domes underground. The last area of the tour , with the largest dome in the area, just opened about 2 years ago. The entrance is amazing. Run by a nonprofit cave association. Doesn't feel touristy if that's a word. Feels more natural. Subtle lighting. But the walk ways and stairs are great . Easy to traverse . Mine and my 7years old favorite so far. Note there are virtually not stalagmites or stalagtites. But if you want a hidden gem that feels off the beaten path with giant underground domes. I would definitely check it out. Plus we walked in signed up for same day tour waited 20 min. Only because the run ever 30 min or so and we got there at 1:10?? .

Out of the 4 caves we visited, this was our favorite. There are a TON of steps. The suspension bridge is scary and I'm not sure I would have felt comfortable taking small children but there were a ton on our tour and they were fine. This cave has been built for tours while leaving the are as natural as possible. The week before we arrived, the entire cave had been flooded so it was cool to see it still messy (or rather in a natural state). Our tour guide was great. The only problem, I'd you weren't in the first few people behind him, you heard nothing that he said. Luckily our party was split up so the ones at front told us what was said and the history of the cave. My only negative was the lighting. It would be nice to sell flashlights and even suggest the purchase or bringing or flashlights. It was hard to see and if you were near the back, you had little light since the tour guide had the flashlight.

I toured the American Cave Museum while he did the cave and although it is a small museum it was fun. I especially got caught up by the story of Mr. Collins, who perished while cave exploring. His story is haunting. And they have a great gift shop! There was a really fun antique shop across the street full of beautiful china and glassware, rooms and rooms of incredible antique finds.

While Mammoth Cave gets all the glory, I have to say that of all the caves I have visited in the area, Hidden River is the most quaint and personal experience. While it lacks the "tradition" cave formations (hardly the cave's fault for anyone singing the place stars) it has such an interesting history. It's a fascinating story of a cave that was used as a literal sewer for generations that through conservation has restored itself and become a great source of interesting cave education for all ages. Our guide was super friendly as was the whole staff at the gift shop. You could tell they really wanted to be there, and due to the smaller touring group size you got the feeling that when they aren't having to "herd cats" they are eager to answer any questions visitors might have in the fullest of detail. Two things worth mentioning: the bridge and the steps. First, the obvious one, the bridge. Im am an absolute chicken when it comes to heights. I don't like getting on 6' step ladders. However, my 10 year old daughter was brave enough to do it, so I felt I must as well. Actually, its not that bad. It doesn't sway like the wooden ones on a playground, and truthfully, going across the first time it is so dark and your eyes are still adjusting that you can do what I did: Wait for the kids in the group to cross first (jumping up and down), then truck on as quick as you can. I just focused on keeping my hands on the rails (COVID be damned in this instance) and make a quick crossing. I bet it took all of 45 seconds to get across when you go quick and steady. The number of steps going down and back is worth noting. You don't notice it as much going down, but coming back they are steep. My legs were certainly feeling it by the time we got to the top, so keep in mind if you have any mobility issues or simply don't like going up a bunch of steps. The whole experience was great. I loved hearing the history and learning more about the cave and the river cutting through it. We will certainly be back.

I went to this place a couple of days ago and boy is it a sight to see . I'm amazed at the cave and the museum. I would definitely recommend you to go . They have the longest swinging bridge in a cave in the world. The walk down to the cave is amazing but the walk back up is very strenuous. Also, props to our cave tour guide Chris . He was very friendly and patient with everyone and of course very informative.

Hands down the best tour! We did the adventure cave tour and Aaron rocked! If you want adventure this is the tour for you! You will definitely need knee pads (fabric ones, not hard plastic), elbow pads may also have been good too, wear cloths you don't care about bc you will be wading thru cave water and getting verrry muddy. Belly crawling under rocks in the mud, climbing up muddy slopes, rocks, steps, repel ropes down muddy hills... Honestly this was the best and we loved it. Thanks so much!! Here are our before and after pictures (our shoes and lower legs are clean bc we hosed them off at the bottom of the steps ??)!

Nice cavern, lots to see and learn I enjoyed the cavern and it had a nice assortment of features.some I hadn't seen before. Only thing I didn't care about was the tour guide seemed to talk to much in one place, always watching her watch to make sure you stayed under ground long enough . I don't want to rush and I take lots of pictures, but I don't just want to stand in one place for to long.

My son and I ventured on the off trail tour. They prepped you with helmets and headlights and there was an old ticket booth shack where you could leave your valuables. Our guide took us to the main cave tour and explained the history of the cave and the changes that have taken place. We saw some bats flying around in the dome! We then went into the river. Our guide was very conscientious of pace and made sure everyone was ok throughout the trip. There were parts we had the option to squeeze through and easier/harder options throughout the tour. We got to go through where Mike Rowe got stuck! It was quite muddy in some areas so definitely have some good boots and it does get wet. We saw the crayfish, cave fish, cave crickets, and an invasive species of crayfish as well. Our guide pointed out key areas, the areas they use as a gauge for flooding, history of the area and some beautiful cave formations. It was our first time going through a caving experience like this and I can say both my son and I loved this three hour tour! Not too strenuous and the options would make it okay for those not wanting to get into really tight spaces. I'm glad I had layered up on clothing and wore my waterproof socks-I was definitely soaked through but the layers definitely helped. The climb back to the shack was probably the most strenuous part but we were hungry and the motivation for food got us going! I'm glad I did not take my iPhone with me because it did get tight in some parts and I was wet from shoulder down. Next time, I will take gloves. Pretty sure there will be a next time for both my son and I. Even if you don't do this off trail tour, the tour of the cave would be so impressive with the domes, river and suspension bridge. Highly recommend!

Very cool. Was not very long. But, has many stairs. And it's a little hard to breath because of the way the cave is, it has higher co2. The cave has so much history. it is a must for cave city. It is also in the middle of small town which entwines with the history. 5 stars loved it.

Really great information. The tour guides were excellent. Be sure to take shoes with very good traction. There are a few stairs to go down into the mouth of the cave. Remember, you have to take them back out. It is not an easy climb and they are steep. There is some amazing history and lots of great exhibits to learn from. The suspension bridge is an amazing experience. It is very dark. They have helmets with lights that would be very beneficial. I, and others, used our cell phone lights to navigate some steps.

The cave was interesting. The staff knowledgeable and super friendly. They actually allowed us to bring our dogs on the tour with us. This history of this cave is very interesting and highly recommend the tour. However, if you are over weight and lose your breath easy, this may not he the tour for you. The CO2 level is very high in this cave and it is very difficult to catch your breath.

Pretty cool cave. The air seems very still in here and is not as cool as a regular cave. We were fine in t-shirts. There were about 700 stairs each way so be mindful of this if you visit as this maybe be difficult for some. Midway through the cave the air gets very thick for a moment. Would not recommend this for people with breathing issues.

Some steep steps and low railings, so I held on tight to my 4 year old's hand at times, but my 7 year old did just fine. I was really happy with everything there. Also there is a very nice (REASONABLY PRICED) gift shop and museum there. So this place is amazing.I tried the mozzarella sticks for app and I must say, best I've had in like 10 years. My entree was the Chicken fried Chicken. It came with what I can only assume was a pepper gravy on top. I've never been behind the idea of gravy on chicken regardless of the popularity of the combo, but this place sold me on it. Service was polite and timely. All in all a truly wonderful first experience. I will definently be back.

My father and I had stumbled across this cave as I had already been to Mammoth park and wanted to see other caves in the area. What a gem! The staff was incredibly friendly and because we were there in the off season we had a private tour. The cave has this amazing indoor suspension bridge to cross as chasm over a river. It is such a cool feat of engineering that the bridge alone is worth going to see. They are also working on actively extending the tour path so there is much more excitement to come.

This place is a cute little gem that you’d be doing yourself a favor to go and see. They have their own little museum inside of the shop as well as educated instructors for their private zip line tour. They have a lovely staff with a very family feel and the place has a welcoming historic vibe to it that will definitely draw you in. There is no parking in front but that’s fine as there is a public parking space not too far behind the shop itself. Inside aside from the museum they have a store filled with gorgeous gems and crystals. The prices are very fair and the whole place is very clean. If you choose not to do the zip line course there is a quaint little waiting space down below that you will take by elevator to go and have a ground floor view of the zip line course.

This place was so cool, and I'm glad we were able to visit on our short stay! We didnt realize there was just the one zipline, but it was really cool because you zip over the entrance to the cave! We also didn't know about the rappel line, which you drop yourself down in front of the mouth of the cave; definitely would have loved that, but will definitely have to check out on another visit! We kinda of stopped in on a whim, but the website does say all that. The tour guide for the cave was really cool and seemed pretty knowledgeable. The cave had an active river flowing through it, which was awesome but made it hard to hear the guide at times. They told us in this cave, flash photography IS allowed because they try to encourage bats to live outside in the bat houses rather than in the cave. They found over the years that when the cave floods in the winter, that any bats living inside get trapped and die, so they want to do everything possible to keep them out to keep them alive.

The rapel is fun too, but not exactly what I expected because a good part of it is free fall. Either way, I enjoyed it a lot. Hidden River/Horse Cave provides a laid back, family friendly experience. Mr. Chris assisted my son with the penny press machine and even gave him some shiny pennies because I did not have any. The lower exhibit has displays of cave life. Buttons light up the inside of the display, which is a lot of fun for little kids. I want to give special thanks to one staff in particular, Ms. Linda. Ms. Linda is a genuinely kind, patient and understanding person. When my son struggled, Ms. Linda was SO EASY GOING and simply wonderful with my son. We will return next summer. Staff hope by then, the dome will be reached and part of the tour.

A Hidden Gem of Stories

We were staying in Horse Cave, KY and decided to visit this intriguing small town tour. First-off, the elevator was welcome as we'd out-walked our fit-bits all week touring. We didn't know the steps back out of this cave (afterwards) would bring some heavy breathing - be ready - go slow. The American Cave Museum is fascinating and the stories it tells brings these ominously large underground expanses to a more personal and relate-able experience. We didn't want to get muddy and took the "basic" walking tour (no crawling through small spaces for me thanks). Our guide was wonderful and she explained some amazing history in the life of this town, and the cave which is it's "center." When I first read about the longest suspension bridge - underground - I had to go. It didn't disappoint. We were astounded by the human construction so far into this cave system, and the fact that it is continuing to be formed. Horse Cave has an interesting story to tell, and a stunning way in which it can be told, underground. There are more amazing places to go beneath the earth besides Mammoth. Hidden River Cave is a hidden gem in Kentucky.

He was so excited over the wildlife we discovered in the cave that day!! Super fun suspension bridge! Will definitely go back when the kid is old enough to do the wild tour!! This is a must see!!!

Our family had a great experience. We found a four pack combo on Groupon for ziplining, rappelling and cave tour for just over $100. The facility was clean and included a small cave museum with free admission. The ziplining was quick but fun. They have one line 75 feet above the ground. Excellent for the first time zipliner. Equipment was sound, and we felt safe. Rappelling was the favorite of both kids who are 12. Beginning point is 75 feet high too. One of our kids had a lot of fear, and Jenna (their guide) was great with him - showing lots of patience, encouragement and advice. The other guide, Draven was awesome too. Both ziplining and rappelling are outside the mouth of the cave. The cave tour is less than an hour, but enjoyable. Linda was our friendly and funny guide. She provided a lot of history of the cave and its restoration. All 3 activities lasted about 2-3 hours. We are very satisfied with the value. The staff is incredibly hospitable and knowledgeable. We learned more about caves on this excursion than the cave tour we went on inside the park.

The zip lining seems a bit over priced, but, after seeing the set up and equipment, we felt confident allowing the kids to go. They also offer a variety of cave tours for all levels. Ok, first, this is a good tour. You learn a lot about the history of the area. The caves are cool. Secondly!! Know that there are a lot of steps and they are almost all together, so you have to do them all at once. There is an area where the oxygen levels drop, everyone in the tour were breathing heavily, be advised! The steps are steeps, and wet. The guides could use a bit more education so as to be able to answer all the questions. The rooms are neat to see and the suspension bridge is very fun.

Wonderful Cave Adventure!
Testimonial Star Rating - 1286357

My sister and I took a short vacation to Kentucky this year, and I put Hidden River Cave on the top of our activity list. There are so many caves in Kentucky (and even in this particular area), that it can be hard to decide which one(s) to visit. We chose Hidden River Cave because it offered something that the other caves don't offer -- the Cave Adventure tour. I called and set up a private tour so that it would coordinate with our travel schedule. Dave, the owner of the cave, was our tour guide. Right when we started our tour, my sister didn't think she was going to be able to do it, but Dave was able to talk to her and she was able to complete the entire tour, including a belly crawl! I am so grateful for that! He is truly interested in keeping the cave environmentally sound, and was very knowledgeable about so many things pertaining to caves. The tour was 3.5 hours long, and we enjoyed every minute of it! We saw cave fish and crawdads, learned about different types of rocks and mineral formations, and got to walk across the amazing suspended bridge (of course)! For the Cave Adventure tour, make sure you wear hiking boots, knee pads and clothes that can get muddy. We did not do any zip lining or rappelling, but we did spend some time in the gift shop. Lots of interesting things to see and purchase, and they are offered at reasonable prices. The museum is right there, as are a few antique shops across the street; so if caving isn't your thing but the rest of your family wants to do it, there are still some things for you to see and do. I highly recommend adding Hidden River Cave to your next trip! Thank you to Dave and the rest of the staff for making our cave adventure a wonderful activity and memory!

This is a great place to visit with several options. The gift shop and museum are first rate. They offer a nice walking area for those that do not want to cave or adventure. The Thomas house is spectacular. The cave is completely different than the others in the area. Lots of history inside and outside of the cave. The tour is short with lots to see, they explain the need to save the environment and consequences for when you do not..

It doesn't look like much from the outside but looks can be deceiving. They have a really good museum which was not expected. We just did the cave tour. The cave is large and had a cool suspension bridge to cross. The guide was young but really knowledgeable. It had a lot of old artifacts laying around which kinda added to it's charm. Nice addition to the mammoth cave experience. If your looking for something outside the park this is a good choice.

Cool tour, the guide wss excellent, very knowledgeable about cave conservation and the local history. Allow about an hour. Must be able to manage a fair amount of stairs, so not ADA accessible. Okay for little kids, some might find it a little dark at times. I would go back once they expand to the next domes, if given the opportunity. I was surprised at the quality of the museum, allow an hour just to see the museum.

I felt like I had made a new best friend by the time our tour was over. My family had been planning this day trip for a while and everyone was pumped until we got there and the complaining started immediately from our teenagers. The tour guide had a real gift of turning our sulking teenagers into students eager to learn. She made it fun and had everyone in our group asking questions and exchanging stories. She asked us as many questions as we asked her. We had a great time and we have many pictures to share with our family and friends. She encouraged us to take family photos during our tour and she took several photos so our entire family could be in them. We all thought she was born and raised in Horse Cave but she was kind of new to the area. The cave was soon to get a swinging bridge so that it would be closer to seeing Sunset Dome. We are planning a family get together and encouraging our friends to meet our new friend and to go see the worlds biggest indoor swinging bridge in a cave. The staff was great and the comic entertaining tour guide from Eastern Kentucky even carried one of the twins up the flight of stairs on the way out of the cave. The teenagers were glad to unplug to hear the exciting history of Hidden River Cave. .

My girlfriend and I were on our way home from Nashville heading to Ohio and saw the signs on the highway and decided to stop. We were blown away with both the service and the experience. Had such a fun time for a great price too. Hats off to Gary who was with us the entire time, he was an amazing guide and so much fun and very knowledgeable. I cannot wait to go back in the summer time and do the adventure tour. Thanks again guys, we had an absolute blast!!!

Really fun tour. Very interesting tour of the cave. We had small kids in our tour and they seemed to have fun. I'm a rock/geology buff, and found it really interesting. The cave has a lot of steps, but is accessible for anyone that can handle stairs. There's an elevator to the opening of the cave, and a ramp, but no wheelchair access past that point. The museum has professional quality displays about the history of Kentucky's caves. They cover history and biology of the caves in Kentucky and also water from the ground. The cave was used for water and electricity decades ago. The remains of the equipment adds to the historical value of the tour. Gift shop has good prices on a variety of mineral samples from other sites. I didn't try it, but their repelling site looks really fun.

Quite short tour, but very fun and informative. It IS expanding, to include the first ever zip line inside of a cave. Still a very impressive cave with a MASSIVE mouth that opens up right below the main town center. I didn't even see that I drove right over it! Lots of stairs, obviously, but make sure to plan ahead. They can close quite abruptly due to rain flooding the cave. And it floods DEEP.

Such a neat place to visit if you're in the area! My bf and I did the combined zipline and cave tour - definitely worth the money! The staff was very down-to-earth and friendly. Our tour guide was very chipper and knowledgeable, and you could tell she truly cared about the cave and the environment around it. Speaking of - the cave is gorgeous! The zipline goes directly over the mouth of the cave, and then once you start the tour and go inside, you get to see a stream and a large domed area. It's very cool. The museum is very informative too - not only does it describe the cave in scientific detail, but also the history of how it was discovered and used by man. This was definitely our favorite "cave" themed stop in Kentucky!

This place is great. The staff are courteous, accommodating, and friendly. It only cost $15ish for a child and an adult cave tour. There are 470 plus stairs round trip. Some of them and the walkways are slippery. There are handrails throughout most of the path, but be ready to get muddy if you use them (we did go a day after a good rainfall). The tour was informative. It was also very hard to hear. There was water rushing and a big group, but I think a few walky talkies dispersed in the group or speakers at the points they stop would solve that. The store was decently priced. It had some interesting things that I hadn't seen before either. The museum was something we personally rushed through because of time constraints. The zip line stuff looked awesome, and I hope they do add the new bridge and possible zip line in the cave soon! I know they are working on an expansion bridge, but it looks like they could clean up after themselves in the cave a little better.

This is an interesting cave that opens in the middle of the town of Horse Cave, the town sits above it. We only got to tour a short distance of the cave because a bridge is being built inside the cave. Our guide, Gavin, was informative and friendly. The walk back up the stairs isn't too bad, although there is a change in the atmosphere half way up. The air seems really thick, making it hard to breathe. I have heart disease, so I'm not sure if it was just me having troubles, the rest of my family handled it well.

Surprised to find this hidden gem in the middle of this small quiet town and so glad we did. This is a great turn around story site of discovery of a pure natural underground river. Thru the damage that mankind can inflict on nature. To the cleaned up treasure that it is today. The regular tour isn't long but if your looking to go 4-5 hours of getting down and dirty, crawling thru the cave system this is available. Which we didn't see at the other cave systems we visited. The staff and museum were helpful and informative with general and specific information and oh so willing to help. Can't say much about the zip line but the kids whizzing by seemed to be having a ball.

We went on the three hour Cave Adventure Tour and it was awesome! Really got to experience climbing through a cave in a way that makes all the other cave tours seem very pedestrian and boring. As you might imagine, we were rather nervous going in, but it really wasn't very scary or too strenuous. It's a workout, to be sure, and there's a lot of bending and crawling, but the only time we had to stop and catch our breath was climbing the stairs at exit/entrance of the cave. Our guide was very knowledgeable and put everyone's safety at the forefront.

The staff was superb in making our zip line experience phenomenal. They made our visit more then we couldve imagined. Our only issue was making customers aware of what we were receiving. Upon paying for our adventure we werent informed on what exactly we were paying for. Large reader boards in the reception area explaining the activity options would be beneficial. I would still bring my family back based on the sheer hospitality of the staff!!

If you are looking for a REAL cave hiking experience, than this is the place to go!!! In comparison to the trails at Mammoth Cave, where they all have routes set and designed to make tours easy and accommodating, Hidden River Cave is completely raw!! My group decided to try the 5 hour cave hike. Our tour guides name was Gary, and he was very nice and knowledgable. We learned a lot about the history of the cave and general cave information and terminology. The tour I would rate a 10/10 for difficulty. Crawling on our hands and knees throughout the tour, and fitting our bodies through VERY TIGHT spaces. In total, we went in about two miles deep into the cave. Personal opinion, you do need to be a little physically active to be able to hand this tour. Even as someone who works out and lifts five days a week, this was by far the most physically and mentally challenging thing I have ever faced. My group ended up only completing 4 of the 5 hour tour because we were extremely tired out!! The ending to the tour was by far the best part. As we reached the end of the tour it was pouring rain, and we got to see beautiful heavy streams of water coming down the 300+ steps of the cave and a gorgeous 200+ foot waterfall. All in all, if you are looking for a good physical challenge along with some cool educational learning and unique scenic views, you should definitely try this tour. The cave tour comes in 3 hour or 5 hour options. The tour guide, Gary, went the extra mile and videotaped us throughout the tour and shared all the files via Dropbox at no additional charge. THANK YOU!!

We decided to tour this cave and I did the zip line while in town. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable! The zip lining was very short but this was my first time so it’s a work me up zip line. Hannah and Anthony were my guides for zip lining. Both were very helpful and cautious and I felt safe. You zip line across the the mouth of the cave to the other side! After the zip line we toured the exhibit till it was time to meet Anthony for our tour of the cave. Anthony was awesome on the tour. This was a more personal tour I felt than the one at Mammoth! Anthony said this is your tour take as long as you wish, stop me if you want pictures etc. Anthony also gave us another cave to go to which was awesome, thanks for the advice. We did the tour along with 2 from Dayton Ohio which isn’t far from us which was cool. Anthony answered any questions we had and gave us some great story’s of the town and history of the cave. Definitely check this place out.

This cave experience was a superb addition to our tours of the caves within the Mammoth Cave National Park. Because it's privately funded through grants, the tour was more relaxed than our previous tours in the Park. Amazing history and information regarding this cave and how the water levels change throughout the seasons. Very nice historical displays in the museum. They are a bit dated, but still very informative and valid. Reasonable price and worth the stop off the beaten path!

We had a 12:45 reservation at Mammoth Cave NP so decided to stop here first. So glad we did. Our cave guide, Linda, was amazing. She is so full of energy and enthusiasam you can’t help but feel the same. She had many stories that had us all laughing enough that you don’t even notice the 400+ steps you are walking up and down. Our group was about 12 compared to our group of 120 for the NP tour. My niece wanted to go ziplining but there was lightening in the area so we came back later in the afternoon and they still gave us the discounted price. Anthony and Greg were wonderful with my 8 yr old niece on the zipline. We also did some gem mining before we left. This cave is run by a non profit staffed by some wonderful folks, so help them out and stop for a tour when in the area, you will not be sorry.

Our tour guide, Gary (get him if you can!) was relaxed and knowledgeable and all the little side questions we asked just made for a very personal tour. I came away from there feeling like I'd made a new friend! Really, the cave was a good one, the cost was very reasonable, the history and details were interesting, and Gary, our guide was the best. The history of the town and cave was interesting to hear. I haven't visited many dry caves before. Pretty cool that at one point your actually under the street traffic lights. A few years ago my Company was given permission to film a scene for a Batman Fan Film and fell in love with the Cave as well as enjoying great hospitality from the Director and all of the staff back in 2007. I have visited a few times since and can tell you that it will not disappoint you at all and this place has always had some of the friendliest staff around. The folks here provided exactly what I wanted the geology students to experience- exploring the cave, not simply taking a tour. Our guide Micah was an exceptional teacher and clearly passionate about caving. He incorporated history, science, and a deep appreciation for the Earth. The museum is good and I do recommend taking at least 20 minutes to explore the displays. It is also great that this is a non-profit organization working to preserve and raise awareness about the role caves have in our lives. A wonderful way to explore and support a good cause!

perhaps an odd title for a review but the entire history of Hidden River Cave is one of human activity. From dumping all types of rubbish into the cave to ill designed and built sewage treatment facilities, the cave was polluted almost beyond repair. Then the good side of humanity kicked in and the cave has been and is being rescued. Not a glamorous cave but still worth the tour. The staff there is very friendly and our guide Anthony was a wealth of information on cave in general and Hidden Cave in particular, They are working on a swinging bridge which will provide access to the back side of the cave. zipline and rappelling also available. If in the area, swing by and say hi

Located in the little, old downtown of Horse Cave. The entrance to the adventure sat directly on the little main street. The guide was very entertaining. Since this was during the week and in the morning and there were no other visitors there, we were able to do the trip by ourselves, just me and my granddaughter. Once all geared-up, we walked from the downtown building one block to the cave which also sat right in the middle of town on the main street. The zipline was first. It was only one zipline and relatively short. Neither of us had repelled before, so we were looking forward to this part at the end of the tour. It was very cool. It wasn’t a huge distance, but for first timers, it gave us a great learning experience of how to repel. You repel from the edge of a rock and down into the mouth of the cave. The repelling part was awesome and made me want to repel more.

We did the shortest tour with our group of 6 (age 8-69). LOTS of stairs and a moderate amount of walking. No tight space issues. Our tour guide was humorous and very knowledgeable about the caves and history. The museum was also informative but needed a little cleaning on the lower level. We enjoyed this as a great preview before going to Mammoth Cave.

We visited this cave during spring break after many days of rain. The cave was wet and we had to wade in waist deep water for a portion of the trail. This 3 hour tour was amazing. Never got cold even after being wet. I highly recommend knee pads and gloves for this tour as you will be crawling and getting muddy. The staff was amazing and fun from the time we got there to the very end. John was our off trail guide and he helped us all to get through the rock climbing, knee buster crawling and even the mud slide. This is not an easy tour and you will be tired afterwards when you have to walk up all those steps to get out of the cave. But if you are looking for a small, friendly place for an awesome adventure, I highly recommend the off trail tour at Hidden River.

My 10 year old son and I like to visit different caves to see things out of the norm. We took the shorter tour, which was guided by Gary. We even had 2 dogs come along with us. There was so much detail given about the history and the conservation efforts. The underground river was amazing to hear, the size of some of the caverns was incredible and we got to see some of the creatures that dwell down there. We would love to come back and go on one of the longer, Wild Cave Adventures.Afterwards, we both went on the zipline which was fun and a pretty long length. Then we went rapelling from Main St. down to the cave entrance. That was very cool, but scary for those afraid of heights. Gary helped with that as well along with John. John was mighty patient with my son and kept him comfortable and laughing. Definitely a place not to be missed!

We were able to take the 3 hour Wild Cave tour. This tour as expected was physically challenging. Our guide was patient with anyone who wanted to take a breather throughout as needed. (Sometimes there was two paths and cavers could choose crawl, climb.) I was also happy after visiting the Mamouth Caves that these caves were different looking. It was also great that our guide told us stories & history of this Cave, the area and of other cavers. His two other benevolent associates had filled us in on some history.

Friendly, knowledgeable and helpful staff. Great museum with informative and interactive exhibits. Picturesque buildings and garden around the cave in the heart of Horse Cave, KY. Be prepared for lots of steps to the cave, but they are worth it! If you have the time and stamina for the longer, rugged tour, do it! Such an interesting history to this cave. Ropes course and repelling also available, but we didn't have time to try it. Prices are very reasonable, especially considering the great guides, history and ecology lessons, and the museum!

We called ahead and they said to bring them and we would figure it out. We were able to do everything, with our 2 dogs in tow. They behaved well and one of the guides even took the pup on a little run so we could all do the zip together. This was a highlight of our trip and I recommend it to anyone. We had a blast! My family of 6 and son's girlfriend (2 parents, 2 teenagers, 3 college age) stayed at Singing Hills Campground one exit south of the Hidden River Cave. We planned on hiking at Mammoth Cave and were looking for some activities to highlight our trip. We made a fantastic choice by getting a package for zipline, rappelling, and a 3 hour tour (they offer a 1-hour too but recommend longer if you can handle slippery and sometimes tight cave trails!). They are a non-profit making a huge difference to the area and the cave system. Call them direct, they will honor the Groupon price and the money goes to them. Not sure if most people do this, but don't forget to tip the guides! Ours guides Hannah and Zach did an outstanding job. They know so much for being college age and they walked through anyone in our party through nervous parts. Only our 23 year old daughter skipped rappelling, everyone did everything else. The office staff is friendly and love dogs too. So if you are like us, we brought our 45lb goldendoodle and she stayed with the staff while we did the zipline and rappelling. (We did the 3 hour tour the prior day without our dog...we should have brought her.). TIP: If you do 3 hour cave tour, wear shoes with good tread, clothing you are ok with getting completely muddy, lightweight long sleeve shirt, and lightweight pants (our girls wore leggings and boys wore thin docker-type pants. Bring an extra change of clothes for afterward (including socks and maybe even underwear!).

The town of Horse Cave has a cave UNDER THEIR TOWN! Right off Main St. is a giant karst window that leads to a 10 mile cave! The folks at Hidden River Cave and the American Cave Museum are a hidden gem. This property is sponsored by the American Cave Conservation Association, and these are people who know what caves are about. The museum is really neat - we didn't have enough time there, but the exhibits we saw were cool and interactive, great for the whole family. A few of us did the zipline, which was okay...the thrill for someone who has ziplined a lot was doing it over a grotto. One of the kids rappelled from Main St. down to the cave entrance, which looked very cool. The cave itself was exciting because of our guide, Gary who clearly knew a lot of stuff about caves and this cave in particular. This is not a cave with lots of crazy formations, but it does have a unique history, and some huge rooms. The standard tour is also not a long tour, because much of the cave was not developed until the last 20 years. Given more time and appropriate attire, we would have gone for the Wild Cave tour. However, Gary did a lot to help us experience the cave that you will NEVER experience as part of a 50 person tour group at Mammoth. Just a very cool, charming, low key operation. If you love caves, this is the place to go. If you are not set on Mammoth, consider this as a more casual option that probably won't sell out the way the more famous National Park tours do. Go see it!

Actually been to cave city area many times and always preferred if your doing caves you only do mammoth cave NP . Now this trip we tried something different and was nicely surprise @hidden River. Tour guides made it very enjoyable and came away with more knowledge then I entered. Fun and less crowded so we found a new place for the kids.

This is an amazing hidden gem! Awesome cave. Great history tour. A good workout too, lots of stairs to get in and out! I thoroughly enjoyed our tour and would recommend it to anyone traveling in the area. The sink hole in which the cave entrance sits is quite beautiful too. It was fascinating to hear there used to be tennis courts in that sink hole to take advantage of the air conditioning provided by the cave. Go see it!

We drive 2 hours to do this for my husband's birthday. We really didn't know what to expect and walked in with no expectations. I got a great deal on Groupon and figured, why not? It was fantastic!!!! Everyone was so nice and professional. They were reassuring to me when I was terrified of repelling and walked me through every single step. This is good for all ages. The cave tour does have a lot of stairs, some are steep. But they are patient and will wait for you. I recommend it.

I found a Groupon for this hidden gem, and I am glad I decided to buy it! Located just a few miles off of the interstate, the cave had convenient free parking. As soon as we walked in, the staff was friendly and there was no wait time to begin our activities. We started with zip lining and rappelling. Gary and Hannah (I think was her name) were great! It was my daughter's first time doing both, and they were very patient. Afterwards, we went on the cave tour. Alyssa was our guide, and she was wonderful! Lots of interesting information was learned about the development of site. The biggest downside was the steps to get in and out of the cave. Fortunately I had already read about it, so I was ready to carry my 7 month old. My 60+ year old dad was winded by the middle and had to take a break, but that was the only negative. This was a nice day trip for us and took about 2 to 3 hours to complete.

Most of our travel baseball team ended visiting the American Cave based on Yelp reviews and Groupon deal. Was a great time spent with Hannah as our tour guide in learning the history of the cave, the local area and the science behind caves. Our walking tour was just over an hour to various points in the cave and the river flowing through. Ended with a cool zip line and a very satisfied group visiting from Maryland.

Imagine walking in 6' of melted peanut butter then crawling over mountains of rocks while viewing crawfish with no color or eyes, blind transparent fish, cave beetles, crickets, and other fun stuff. That is what the Hidden River Cave is. Move forward a week or two from the cave flooding, and it may not be fresh mud like we had. Peggy was our guide for 9 Girl Scouts. She was AMAZING. Many of the girls had never "caved" before this trip. The trip is difficult but Peggy got all of us through safely. We had fun. We learned a lot. We created awesome memories.

We were in the area for three days, and tried to see as many caves as we could. The wild cave tour at Hidden River was the last on our schedule, but was by far the best! We did the three hour tour, which was perfect for us. They also offer a five hour, which I would recommend for younger or very fit people! I am 52 and not in the greatest shape, but I had no problem navigating the cave. Bring knee pads and gloves, you will need them. You get muddy, wet and a little sore, but not as bad as we were expecting. There are a couple of tight squeezes, but take your time and you will make it. The views of the cave are spectacular! No trails, no paths, only your headlamps for light. You are walking and crawling over rocks and ledges, often with a small drop off to the water below. There was a knotted rope we had to use to climb down, and later back up, that for us was the most challenging part. But it was more nerves than difficult. All the tours we did were unique and fun in their own way, but by far this was our favorite tour! Thanks to our guide Gary and the crew in the office for making our last day the best!

If you have youngsters , or oldsters, or really anyone not up to a full-blown, say maybe like a " Mammoth Cave" tour, this is the one for you. I'd rate it a must-see! It is really quite an amazing little gem of a cave tour, and the museum was very well done as well. I plan to take a day trip this summer and tour again, this time with my four young grandkids. It won't overtire or overwhelm them, and will be the perfect orientation to Kentucky cave systems. They will love it too!

Loved this cave. Much different than others we have visited. It has a river running thru it and a huge chamber room. Our guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. It is a dry cave, hence no formations, but is a must see for the history, conservation efforts, and other interesting info that you receive. My husband was blessed to find a fossil in the gift shop he'd been searching for a long time. That was of course the highlight of his trip. LOL! They also have other tours...zip lines, repelling, and a mud crawl. Just call ahead for those as they book up. Sometimes they can't do the mud crawls because of rain since that causes the river in the cave to rise. If you are in the area you need to do this cave tour. There are around 400 stairs to navigate thru the tour as well. So keep that in mind for anyone with heart, lung, or walking issues.

We did the groupon deal with the cave tour, zipline and rapel. So our guide on the tour was filling in because of spring break busy season. He said he hadn't done a real tour in a long time. However, he grew up in the area and had some good stories. The tour length wise was the shortest I've ever been on. I wouldn't go back. But the zipline and rapel were fun and our guides were great. The museum was ok, downstairs was very musty. I won't go back for the cave. It was not impressive. There are no formations in the part we saw. But they do have a wild cave tour that may be better. Every one was very friendly, that bumped them up a star.

If you enjoy hiking nature trails then certainly check out this cave. What enticed us to visit here versus the numerous other caves of the area was the advertised 'boat tour'. We got to hidden river just after 3pm and the tours leave on the top of the hour so we had nearly an hour to kill before our tour. Luckily, that was fine because they have an entire nature trail system you can walk while you wait. The boat tour itself doesn't take very long and you don't go very far into the cave, but it's still neat to see and not many caves do a boat option so that was a new experience for us

Purchased a Groupon for their cave tour, zipline, and rappelling combo. Zipline was small, but fun. Rappelling was a new experience for us which was cool because we rappelled down the side of the cave that we toured afterwards. The guides that helped us were competent and friendly. The cave tour was very short, they will be expanding it further into the cave in the future which will be cool. Honestly, it is not the most glamorous or impressive of the caves, but my son and I had a wonderful time because the customer service was bar none!! Gary and Charolay went above and beyond to make the experience fun, entertaining and memorable!! Gary took us on the cave tour, and since we were a small group, we got A LOT of opportunity to ask questions and take out time in the tour process (did not just feel like we were being herded like cattle). Gary also explained the plans to expand the type of tours that will be offered in the next year and my son got very excited!! We are already planning a trip back within the next couple of months to do the Cave Adventure Tour (the 3 hour one) where we are completely hand on!! We also did the rappelling and zip line. Again, not high end or extreme, but the quality of attention we got from Gary and Charolay made it a million times more fun than other zip lines we've been to. Now, it was the first time rappelling for both me and my son, and neither one of us ever had any apprehension in making the descent (other than me "squishing the bunny"), it was just FUN!! To sum it all up, not only will we be back, we want to bring friends with us...Don't be fooled by the "Touristy, cheesy" exterior, this place is legit!!

She answered all questions and kept us challenged and safe. There were only eight people in our group and we had a very hands on experience. This was not a walk along a trail type of tour. Pack a water bottle and a small snack and camera or phone, but pictures are hard to get because it's pretty dark and you're on the move. Good cave tour to supplement your Kentucky caving experiences. Not a lot of your typical cave formations in this cave, but it is different to see a full fledged river (not just a little stream) winding through a cave. Our guide gave us a lot of history of the cave and the town, which we enjoyed. After years of neglect and mistreatment, it seems as if the town has done a lot of work to clean up and restore this cave. I hope that tourists come back to the town to help revitalize this community! It also sounds like they are doing a lot of upgrades to the tour during the summer of 2017, which should be ready for the public in fall 2017. We would love to come back when construction is done! We did not do the rappelling or zip line. Rappelling looked very cool, but the zip line was fairly small. Come for the cave tour and/or rappelling!

Looking for something fun to do........This is it! Took a few days of Springbreak to find some adventure for the kids. Hidden River Cave was an unexpected gem of an adventure! Located in an old town, rich with history (that part you will learn later from the Gary and Hannah- the most awesome guides!) My kids are still talking about it and ready for more caving. Gary and Hannah were patient with the entire group with kids of all ages and adults. We did things we didn't know we could do and learned a lot of interesting facts about history, geology and caves. If you have homeschoolers, this would be an excellent field trip- my 11 year old is still quoting facts from Gary about rocks, the state fossil and how many species of animals are found in the Cave. We learned how many caves there are in Kentucky and TN and so much more...... That doesn't even count towards the fact we zip lined and rappelled into the opening of a cave. Highly recommend and Ask for Gary and Hannah!!

My parents, my children, and I traveled to Kentucky in August 2016 to tour caves at Mammoth Cave National Park. We had a great time, but our favorite tour was actually outside of the National Park at Hidden River Cave (AKA Horse Cave.) The tour was a small group, which really heightened the experience. Our guide Gary was very enthusiastic and informative, and clearly passionate about the local history and science involving these unique geological structures. The tour was an ideal length...and the fact that there is an underground river in the cave seems magical. The museum was also interesting and enjoyable, while my twin boys loved the gift shop (especially the geodes)! Also, it was very affordable for our family. We are so glad we tried this spot and highly recommend it to anyone.

I was lucky enough to be a able to schedule an "off the trail" tour of the Hidden River Cave. This three hour tour was reasonably priced and was an experience I will never forget. Our guide, Keith, was personable, knowledgeable, and had our safety and enjoyment as his top priority. It was a true spelunking experience and included views I have never thought possible. We were allowed to move at our own pace to enjoy the sights, Keith never pushed us to do anything we were uncomfortable with. We were able to hear about not only the history of the cave itself, but the history of caving itself. I could go on for a lengthy time about the awesome experience and being able to see this amazing cave, but I will sum it for you as such… Caving was something I had on my "bucket list" to cross off. Now instead of crossing it off, it has now become something I want to do every chance I can get, and would make a return trip for the same tour if the opportunity arose. A huge thank you to Keith once again for making this one of the most memorable experiences I have ever had.

My brother and cousin have visited other caves in the area and both said they haven't had an experience like the one at Hidden River Cave. Highly recommend!

Two friends and I went for a wild cave tour over Memorial Day weekend. We rode from Maryland for this and it was absolutely worth it! The staff that greeted us were all friendly and our guide was fun and knowledgeable. The wild cave tour was a real caving experience with out any of the tourist crap; exactly what we were looking for. If you're ready to get muddy and actually explore a cave system then the wild cave tour here is the thing for you.

Terrific experience and I would highly recommend this if you have ever thought about caving. Gary (our guide) was excellent. I felt very safe the entire 3 hrs. He gave us lots of information about the cave and living organisms in it. Some spots are pretty tight to get through, but most (not all) are optional challenges. Take the challenge and enjoy. This is not like an easy walk on pathways so wear good shoes with heavy treads. Knee pads would prevent some bruising. Gary took some photos inside for us as it's too dark for most phones (see attached photo of a pool of water inside the cave). This was my first "wild" caving experience and it was awesome. Will try to get another group together for a 5 hr. one next time!

Loved my first true caving experience. The 3 hour tour is more like 4 due to set-up and post caving pictures and changing. Awesome employees. Hannah really helped me on the repelling course when I got stuck. So kind and well trained. Gary was an awesome caving guide, made sure everyone was safe, stayed together and taught us things about the cave and history of the cave as we went. Can't recommend long sleeve light weight shirt, knee pads and sturdy ankle covering boots enough. You need good shoes for this. There are a couple of spots that are very tight but you can do it! Just don't panic. :) Will be coming back with more friends soon.

This was the first stop of many on our 3 day trip to the Mammoth Cave area. We were there as soon as the door opened, with 3 kids, and the staff could not have been more friendly. We spent some time in the museum, and then went on a cave tour, which lasted about 45 minutes. The tour guide was fantastic with the kids, explaining the history of each area of the cave. She even did shadow puppets for the kids at the end. There really wasn't anything else that would have made this visit better.

My husband enjoyed the zip line, and the repelling wall. It was his first experience for both. He was impressed at how well they coached him. We thought it was really neat to have a cat named Zipper in the museum. We are cat lovers and we were told how they saved Zipper we he was a kitten and gave him a home.

We really loved this cave! The history shared with us by our guide, including that of his family as it relates to the history of the cave was just amazing. Located in the center of town, it is the highlight of everything. It really should be advertised much more. You can see what looks like a very very large opening in a sink hole. Once you enter there are hundreds of stairs going down which are in good condition and well lighted. As you descend you can hear the rushing water at the bottom, which are two rivers the come together and exit miles away somewhere. We went right after a major week of rain and the water was visibly rising in hours. They are opening to the public soon an area that for now is only visited by advance reservation with guides because the old walkway collapsed and you would be walking and crawling through mud forever. We were not overly impressed with the museum itself but take the time and go through and be sure to read the information that is provided therein. Special thanks to our guide, Greg!

We did the "Extreme" Hidden River Cave Tour. This was a variation of the advertised Hidden River Cave Tour. We really liked this option. The staff at HRC is outstanding! They were very flexible with the type of tour we wanted to do. There were only the 5 of us on a private, 3 hour, down & dirty tour of Hidden River Cave. Our guide, Draven, was an excellent guide and host during our adventure. We were 150 ft underground crawling on our bellies at times. We climbed over rocks, under rocks, on ledges, through water, mud, silt and sand. We climbed up rocks & walked ledges 10 ft up and over the river with ropes. This tour has NO pathways, planks to walk on or lights. We all wore miner's helmets with individual lights on them. When we stopped at a flat surface for a rest, we all turned our lights off. You can't even imagine the intense darkness of being in that cave with no light. This tour was very challenging and a bit frightening at some parts. THIS TOUR IS NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART!! This tour is for those who are serious cavers, for those who are not afraid to go off the beaten path and for those who are in GOOD PHYSICAL SHAPE. This tour was only $35.00 per person because it was raining on the day we went and we couldn't do the zip-line & rappelling. Again, Bravo to the staff for adjusting the price and accommodating us. I only have 1 drawback. If you are staying at Jellystone Park, BUYER BEWARE. Jellystone advertises on their website (under "Stuff to Do") that lunch is included in this tour. IT IS NOT INCLUDED. It is discounted to $7.00 per person. We did not find that out until after we were done with our cave tour & it was time to go to Turtleini's. I spoke to the manager at HRC and they actually got on Jellystone's website and they confirmed that Jellystone's website does, in fact, say that the lunch is included in the tour price. They were very nice about it. This is an error on Jellystone's part, not on HRC Tour's part. Other than that 1 thing - this was an excellent adventure that is well worth the price!!! YOUR'E GOING TO GET VERY, VERY DIRTY - SO BRING CLOTHES & SHOES YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT RUINING!!!

We had a great time at Hidden river cave! We took the cave tour as a family (mom, dad, 5 yr old and 8 yr old). It is a very interesting and unique setting. There are a lot of stairs and some slippery slopes, so it may not be good for anyone who has a hard time with these things. The cave does not have much for formations due to the river , but it is very interesting to see first hand how these types of caves are formed. After the tour, my husband and son (8 yr) did the zip line and repel package. It was the first time for both of them to do either activity. The zip line was the first activity, it was very quick and over in a few seconds. Next, they were lead back to the mouth of the cave to repel. My husband repelled first and was down in a couple of minutes. My son went next and took about 6 minutes. They never rushed him or pushed him to do anything he wasn't comfortable with. They gave him the time he needed to repel at his own pace, and I greatly appreciate that. As a mom, my heart was racing to watch my son repel down into the mouth of the cave, but what an experience! Their guides were very friendly and safety oriented. They gave very clear instruction. We finished up with a short walk trough the museum which had some good information about the cave .

Perfect for teens and adults. Wife joined, and she had a great time. Very reasonable prices - allows you to have a good experience with VERY VERY good instructors. They stay with you, one rappelling down first, while another stays and send you down 1 at a time. It's a brake on system- so you are feeding line to disengage the brake, otherwise you go nowhere. You should try this. N

We were driving through late in the afternoon with my daughter and just got in time for the last tour. It was great because we were the only people on the tour. The whole tour only takes an hour, so not super long. We started with the cave museum, and its nothing spectacular, but had some good information about cave. We then took the tour. Our guide was great, and was very knowledgeable of the cave and area. He enjoyed answering questions, so it was like a private tour. The walk down to the cave is steep, but its not that strenuous and I thought was a great way to stretch the legs out. The cave is cool and has some interesting history. We saw some albino insects, and the cave is unique as its a river cave. Quite a bit different than Mammoth which is down the road. My only complaint was that is was kind of short. Only go into the cave for about 250 yards. For $15, I thought I would get a little more. I do understand their negotiating mineral rights to get more access for the cave and make the tour longer. They said there's some cool stuff further back. If you have time, I would recommend taking the longer tours into the wild cave. As described, it looks fun. Also the rappelling thing and zip line adventure also look like a blast. I wish we had more time. This is a fun little spot the family will enjoy. Check their site for options if you a lot time.

First off, even though the cave is cool.....you aren't in the cave the entire tour, so most of the people on our tour actually wore shorts and tee shirts and were fine. I thought it was going to be like a Mammoth Cave tour, so I had a jacket and capris on and I was too warm. Had to take my jacket off multiple times. Okay, so you start out purchasing our tickets in the gift shop. Cute area. Parking in back and the museum is just a little store in the middle of main street! You don't expect to go into a cave from here! the guide was fantastic. Wish I remembered his name. He gave quite a bit of history in the museum itself. Then we went down the stairs and onto a platform that overlooks the cave. I'll admit, I didn't realize that was the cave at first (thought it was a cool sinkhole). There were folks ziplining over head and then being lowered so I was pretty interested in watching them for a bit. Talked on the platform for a bit about more history which was really interesting and fun to listen to. Then we started descending down. You could tell the air temp difference, but again, most people were very comfy in their summer wear. Stopped a few more times before actually entering the cave. It was neat when we got to the river that flows underground! I wish it would've been better lighting to get some better pictures, but overall, it was fine. It's an out and back tour, so going back is much quicker. He turns off the lights to give you an idea as to just how dark it really is. We were lucky enough to be the last in line, so he had us hold his flashlight while he did that. So after he turned the lights back on, I had my husband shine the light at things I wanted pictures of. :) After we got back topside, we went back into the museum to change out of our pants/jackets and looked around. My kids each bought one of those bags that you can "mine" for jewels out in the little waterway. There's a TON of cool gems in there. I would definitely recommend this tour. We love going through caves and this did not disappoint!

My boyfriend and I had traveled to Kentucky to tour Mammoth Cave. Neither of us had ever tried ziplining, and we wanted to simply sample that activity somewhere before leaving the state. Then we found that Hidden River Cave and American Cave Museum offered a short and inexpensive zipline ride. Perfect! Charolay and Draven were very friendly, personable, and professional, and gave us the experience we were looking for. We had a great time! Let me start out by saying that my family takes a lot of cave tours. We love it. And this is by far the best, even counting Luray and Mammoth. The cave is not huge or more impressive than the others. It's the guide who makes this tour incredible. Her name is Charolay and she's about the funniest person I've ever met. She has a hundred stories and even more jokes and she'll keep you laughing through all 149 steps in the tour. I will warn you that there are a lot of steps into and out of the cave. I am 55 and I have a mild heart condition and I struggled a lot on the way out. I stopped several times to rest and it still took me about 15 minutes to catch my breath when I was done. That being said, there are also zipline adventures and repelling adventures here, as well as the museum and cave tour. I did not go on these, obviously, but those of our group who did had a great time. There is a nice little gift shop here to pick up some trinkets and everyone associated with the facility is very helpful and more than happy to talk to you about anything. I would go back here in a heartbeat as my husband and I and even our tween daughter had a ton of laughs and got a bit of an education too. Just ask for Charolay and you'll have the best time ever.

Wife was nervous but Charolay and Draven were great with the kids (& wife) and we all had a great time. We later did the cave tour with Gary who was very nice, informative and funny. Museum and gift shop were good too. A must see but be sure to arrive early as it got crowded later on. Reasonable amount of steps for a cave and they have an elevator to take you down from museum to start of tour. Lunch tip - Turtleini's Pizza is right around the corner and had a great lunch buffet.

This museum is a hidden gem operated by the city and the AMerican Cave Conservation association! So informative and very well done! We had our 9 year old grandson with us, and spent several hours learning about the "karst" area, sinkholes, the water cycle & underground water, the history of Hidden River Cave, (which is a success story from past cave pollution and a beautiful cave to tour), a wonderful video about the cave and also an informative video about bats. I could go on and on; a bevy of information here! Several interactive displays. It is two levels. So sad the beautiful brick surrounding historical buildings are mostly out of business. Zip lining or rappelling is included in your ticket, it was raining while we were there but since we were staying at the KOA campground 2 miles away they said we could come back another day. Very nice of them. This place is a must see!

Yes! By far a better cave than Mammoth Cave for sure. Just be sure to arrive early to beat the crowds. My family and I arrived when they opened and it was just us and one other person on the tour. Yes there are steps but what cave doesn't have steps, it's underground. How else are you expected to go down and out? I honestly have to say this is my second favorite cave. We had a great tour guide named Greg. I hope to come back one day there is talk of expansion. If your in the area or just passing through this cave is a must, don't miss it! We did this as a whim as we were staying in the wigwams a town over. Nice cave tour, Clay was very informative and I learned lots. We only had our family in our tour but they leave once you get through the museum and are ready to go. Once we got back our teen son decided he wanted to try to rappel down the mouth of the cave and declared it... totally worth it!

We had a great day! Our cave tour guide Draven was very nice and informative. The cave is in great shape and we can't wait for the expansion they were talking about! Our zip line and rappelling guide Gary was funny and made us feel very safe with the whole experience as it was our first time for both. He was even kind enough to make sure we had great pictures to take home. They definitely went above and beyond to make sure we had a great experience! My only wish is that we could have done it again! Clayton and Maria were both very nice as well and caught us at the bottom of our rappel lines. By them both being down there my husband and I were able to rappel together which is so awesome!

Had to do repelling, first time, and it was great. They instruct you strap you in top of the line gear, then throw you off the edge! Just kidding... There were kids before me, and older people behind me. I am 60. It was too cool. Price was more than reasonable. Afterwards, a nice tour of the cave. It is not a huge cave, but it has great history and wonderful very big rooms inside. Some of the ancient equipment are still there. The river flows threw and you can walk along it on a platform. Easy walking for everyone. A lot of steps to get to the bottom, then back up. Very wide walkways, little artificial light which lets you imagine how it was long ago. Very nice.

It's dark and loud down by this hidden river so my kids who are 9 and 5 were scared. But my husband and I loved it. Very small tour size so almost like a personal tour through the cave. We saw animals, blind fish and cave crickets. They have a wild cave tour for the more adventurous folks. Very glad we stopped

I had never zip lined before and that was the first order of business. It was short, but got a taste for it and would like do again on a longer course. Great for beginners. The Hidden River Cave was interesting from mine and my husband's view. Our teenage boys were just glad to escape the heat. We would like to learn moore about the water pump the town used to use to bring water up out of the cave. The museum had a lot of interesting facts and I would have like to have spent more time on, but their air conditioning was out that day. It was a little too hot to linger.

We had planned a weekend getaway to Mammoth Cave National Park, and because of a Groupon offered by Hidden River Cave and the American Cave Museum, added this tour along with ziplining and rappeling. We are so glad we did; this was one of the highlights of our trip! The fact that this cave is literally under Main Street in Horse Cave was the first surprise -- the next surprises were how much fun we had! Hannah was delightful from the moment we entered their door, gave a fabulous cave tour, and was so helpful and fun during our first-time ziplining and rappelling experience. Keith was also fun during the ziplining and rappelling adventure! Although the museum displays themselves seem a little dated, the small size of our cave tour group was a welcome difference from the "mammoth" tour sizes at Mammoth Cave, and the personal touches extended by Keith and Hannah made us feel like family by the time we had finished our experience. They even let the less adventurous of our party zipline twice instead of rappelling. We look forward to returning to see what else Hidden River Cave has in store!

Great Cave Adventure Tour

The Cave Adventure Tour was one of the most fun hikes/tours I've ever done! We hiked along the underground river, scrambling over rocks and squeezing into a few tight spots and got REALLY muddy and wet in the process. Our 10 and 12 year old loved it. it was the best part of the trip to KY for them. Be prepared to get VERY muddy though, and good hiking boots are so necessary, because of the slippery and uneven rocks. It was so much fun! We also rappelled , and even though it was the kids' first time rappelling and were slow and a bit nervous, the staff was very patient and encouraging and we all eventually made it down, and they look back fondly on the experience, even though they were pretty scared at the time.

Today we sought out to do a cave tour at Mammoth Cave, but of course all the tours were sold out. We decided to come to Hidden River Cave and we're able to go right in with a small group of only 5 people including us. It was very interesting and the cave is actually right under the down town area and accessed directly under the museum. We had Greg as our tour guide. He was very informative and helpful as well as the rest of the staff. We will be going back for a longer tour in the future. We may even get up the nerve to zip line or repel. Very cool day trip.

She entertained my two children (10 & 8) had them asking tons of questions, had them answering scientific questions, had them thinking!!!! We had so much fun. We had every intention of visiting Mamoth, but when they were booked up, we opted for some smaller caves. Glad we did. The history of this cave and its return to a place that is fit to tour is an interesting one. Our guide was awesome and fun (Thanks John). They are looking to expand the tour following a recent purchase of the adjacent formations. Hope the new additions work well for them. There are a lot of steps, can't be helped. Gift shop has a few options for items that say you were there as well as other stuff. Some quaint looking shops on the street, but none of them were open on Sunday mid day.

Looks like a very small outfit from the outside when you arrive, but don't be deceived!! Very well worth your time to take the tour!! The museum is 2 levels and has several science and history exhibits. There are 2 cave tours, an easy boardwalk tour for those who just want to hear the history and see the formations, and the cave crawler version for those who really want to get down on their hands and knees and get muddy. But the cave is absolutely beautiful! two underground streams converge in this wet cave to form some very lovely scenery and formations. Very well worth it.

WOW! I am so glad that Mammoth Cave was sold out. We opted for a few of the lesser-known and more local tours. This one was AMAZING!! The tour size was super quaint at only 5 so there was plenty of time for ALL of our individual questions to be answered. The guide seemed genuinely interested in our lives, not just making $$ off of us by doing a job. He was passionate about all things caves--especially the history, ecology, preservation and small factoids. A word of caution: if you are looking for gorgeous, picturesque cave formations this is NOT the tour for you. And they'll tell you that. But if you want a historical, laid back tour then you have GOT to give them a try. We're already planning our return trip for the hours-long wild cave tour instead of the hour long public tour.

We received discount coupons from where we were staying at Jellystone. The package included the cave tour, zip line, repelling down to the mouth of the cave. For our first time doing all 3 it was great fun. It was my daughters 8th birthday and she had a blast. I am sure there are more thrilling zip lines out there but again, for our first time it was thrilling to us. The tour guide Dave that took us on the cave tour was full of information and quite knowledgeable. The staff were all very friendly and one of the repel guides even took pictures of my husband and I and then my daughter with his phone and emailed them to us. I thought that was a really nice gesture and great as we couldn't take our own repelling down. I felt completely safe at all times and felt that the staff made sure on safety for all including themselves. This is a great place for an afternoon. Our package included a discounted lunch at Turtleini's next store. The pizza and salad bar were good there, also.

We were looking for a weekend getaway for spring break that included something interesting within driving distance of Chicago. When I found the cave areas, I knew I didn't want to just be part of a guided tour, behind the ropes. I've been in several other caves and have seen formations, I wanted to experience a cave. This trip included myself, husband and 9 yo daughter. We are pretty active and adventurous. The Hidden River Wild cave tour gave us the adventure I was looking for! I read other reviews and knew what to expect. Bought knee pads at Play It Again sports for $0.99/pair and it was the best $ I spent. There is a quite a bit of crawling involved. We also wore clothes and shoes we wouldn't mind throwing away at the end, especially the shoes. Know in advance that there are no formations to see in this cave, it's more about crawling through tight spaces and over rocks and through "rabbit holes". You'll walk through water and sandy mud, climb up and crawl and slink through spaces you can't believe you fit! While it was a busy day (we didn't want to wait an hour+ for the zip and rappel) there were only 10 ppl in our cave tour which included 3 kids in the 9-12 age group. The kids all did great and the parents kept up with them :) Mikey, our guide was great with telling us about the cave and clean up efforts and accommodating the kids who didn't want to wait for the parents to keep up. I felt he always made sure they were safe helped as needed. He has young kids as well so he knew what to expect and how to handle them which was reassuring. If you want to really experience a cave, this was great!

This is exactly what we were looking for as we've always enjoyed nature shows and wish we could do "that." Well, we did "that." and it was very very good. Be sure to bring another change of clothes as you'll be in water and mud and sometimes sliding on your butt. Knee pads would be helpful too, as there is some crawling over small rocks that is generally painful, but do-able. We LOVED this site. We all repelled too! two thumbs up

For me it's a fun time to walk into a cave, hear the rushing waters of the "river" underground, and explore the history of a place like this. On top of that, to do a little zip line, and rappel down an 85-foot cliff makes for a memorable experience. This may be for you--if you don't mind transporting yourself down, then up many stairs. The cave museum is kinda dark, and dank like a cave...with nice displays of its history. The guides were very good, kept us engaged, and made it a good experience. It's particularly nice on a hot day--with the cooler cave temperature acting like a natural air conditioner. Try it!

The entire experience was a fresh, novel, and exhilarating experience for my lady and myself. The short cave tour was interesting enough with different info provided, but the zipline and rappelling experiences which were included in my groupon purchase were very exciting and informative to us senior first timers. The staff was very helpful and patient with both of us in a small younger group of individuals. We felt safe and elated as were coached through both activities. Once finished with each , we both sensed a feeling of pride and accomplishment in ourselves, with a feeling of wonderment, in the fact we had not done this sooner in our lives. We left with a further understanding of life's journeys, and a desire for some future repetition.

I researched the different tours offered through the national park, and the fun spelunking tours were only offered on weekends and were totally sold out. So private tours were going to be the route we were taking. My experience has always been that private is always better than public, and this was no exception. The entire time was exceptional. Gary was our guide, and went above and beyond to ensure everyone had fun. Lots of mud, lots of water, some cave wildlife, and three hours of hands on experience. If your in the mammoth cave area, do yourself a favor and experience caving as its meant to be, not in a long line listening to a guide speak and not getting yourself completely muddy. Come prepared with some gear, call ahead to find out what you'll need. I was with my wife, both of us are in our mid forties. We also brought our son and daughter, and their cousin. My son and his cousin are both nine, my daughter 7. All three do competitive travel sports, and had an absolute blast!

The cost of the tour was only $5, but we got to enjoy the entire tour but enduring one stretch of about 2 inches of water on bare feet. It was cool to see the river running through the cave and get a sense of how these caverns are created. Be warned with all the water it was quite cold in the cave. My wife and I visited this weekend and had a great time! We did the short walking tour of the cave where Gary told us about the history of the cave and the town. After the cave tour, we did the Zip Line and repelling. My wife has never repelled before and the staff was very helpful and patient with her. The zip-line and repelling seem suitable for beginners and was fun even for a more experienced climber. The cave museum is pretty informative and has several exhibits where you can learn about the history of caving and cave wildlife. Thanks for a great time, I hope we can make it back for a wild tour sometime!

Really neat place. Only open face cave that you'll see in the middle of a town! Going under ground and seeing the river was pretty awesome in its self. Definitely a must do if your visiting this area!

Fun place! But the prices, not so much. Got a package of the tour, zipline, and repel. The tour was great, can't wait until they expand it. The zipline was fun, but you only go on one line per ticket! Same with repelling! Other than this , I enjoyed my time here.

This review should have been finished a couple months ago, but I still wanted to give credit where it was due. We were looking to zip line on our last day in the Mammoth Cave area, and we stumbled across a Groupon for this location. We called ahead because we have a 4 year old to make sure there weren't any issues with his age (there weren't). The location is in the middle of a small town right on what appears to be their main street. The cave, rapelling, and zip lining literally takes place in the backyard of the building. Inside there is a gift shop and a pretty impressive museum. The cave itself wasn't the most amazing among our visit to the area, but the opening is pretty impressive. Zip-lining here was perfect for first timers and/or kids. I forget their names unfortunately, but the folks here were great. They were incredibly personable and really seemed to be having a good time.

Read this if you are going: The place is not easy to spot (in spite of the huge sign!). It is in the building right on the main street. You can see the fenced off area of the cave. Do not do as I did and wander around the park wondering where the entrance is. :) Now be aware this is a very limited cave in a few ways. You will see very few typical cave formations such as stalactites and stalagmites.... and those kinds of things. The total distance you will travel is very short..maybe 800 feet? There are many steps (over 450?) and it may not be easy to come back up. The museum/waiting area is interesting. If stuffy on a hot day. But spend some time checking it out. The most interesting part of the cave tour is the history, and the second more interesting part is experiencing the temperature difference as you head toward the mouth. Not yet in the cave, the opening is very much cooler and you see why there used be a tennis court built here. The guide (Gary) is good at explaining history and adding to the value of the trip. The part with all the shadows is a bit cheezy but the kids like it. If you have done this trip, you know what I mean. :) Two of our group did the zip line and it was a good beginner zip line experience. Rapelling looked more like ra-dropping so we decided to not do that. Summing up... this is a good cave tour to supplement other cave tours. The history alone and the guide make it a good value since it is not very expensive and just that area of the mouth and the old building are awesome to experience.

We are having a blast a Horse Cave & American Cave & Karst Center. We did the zip lining and repelling. Now we are about to go on the one-hour cave tour. Very family friendly. The zip lining and repelling would be for older children (of course). The guides Marie & Clay were very thorough and made sure we were safe at all times.

What a great find.! We came down for some family camping and found this in the local attractions listed by the campground. I never would have guessed that there was a cave right under a town. My kids loved it. The tour was short but very informative. The history and stories about the cave and the river were amazing. The museum was well thought out and the exhibits were very informative. It was a bit hot in the cave tour waiting area. I think at one point we got forgotten and had to go ask when our tour would start, about a half hour after the original start time but the delay didn't hurt the tour. The only thing my 12-year old didn't like was we didn't go on the zip line. Maybe next time.

Got a Groupon for cave tour, rappelling, and zip lining, and took my 9-year-old daughter. We had a great time! Gary lead our cave tour, and he and Maria handled our rappelling and zip lining. All were very good and professionally handled. Gary and Maria were great! Their safety practices for zip lining and rappelling are also top notch, which was extra important with having a 9-year-old doing both. All the staff had great attitudes, and were very customer oriented. The structure/grounds are very cool, and have great historical significance. I want to do the wild cave tour next time, which is a 3 or 4 hour tour going way out in the cave. This is not a mega-park like Mammoth, but it is well worth the trip!

Great staff and nice little cave tour if you don't mind steps (200+ each way). This is a small cave in the small downtown area. Kid friendly but not especially appropriate for under 6 or 7 years old. Some of the tour is on scaffold walkway above flowing water and the railing is not sufficient for small children to be unwatched for even a few seconds. We didn't try the more serious cave adventure tours or the zip line but they looked fun for first timers.

I don't throw around words like 'awe inspiring' or 'incredible' Willy nilly. But this adventure was both if those things AND more. I have a new found desire to become a cave nerd. I have yet to stop raving to friends, co-workers and complete strangers. My fourteen year old son and I made a date to get our adventure on. We decided to venture to Horse Cave to see what there was to offer. We had a wonderful tour of an underground river that lasted well over an hour and left me sore in the calves for 2 days. I LOVE a good work out! We then ziplined and repelled. Both of our first times for both activities... and we ended our adventure checking out the cave museum. I couldn't be more pleased. I just couldn't.

My family and I have been through most of the caves and caverns through Virginia, and now after a week of touring through eastern Kentucky and Tennessee we had the pleasure of visiting Hidden River Cave. What a great story. While there are a lack of formations, this is a trip well worth the time. The museum was a great learning experience and the tour guide was thorough and didn't rush us even though we were the last group of the day. I look forward to returning again and hopefully they will have expanded back into the larger domes.

This was NOT a cheap ploy for money that seems to be all over the place in the area. This gave the family including two easily bored boys (10 and 12) a wonderful experience. Very knowledgeable and friendly tour guide gave all the time for questions on this reasonable priced hour or so tour that was a nice pace. I could tell on the kids faces that they will remember this for the rest of their lives. Look forward to making this a regular stop for years to come. Well done Hidden River Cave staff.

Hidden River Cave/American Cave Museum is a great place to visit...or stay a while! Go to Snappy's for great food -- just around the corner. Turn left at our only stoplight and you are there! Plus, you can browse our TWO bookstores in town and see spend a nice evening at KYRepetory Theater. The Cave and Theater have a wonderful music series on Tuesday nights -- it was Tuesday last season, so I expect the same this year. There is an elevator if you don't want to use the steps. The view from either down into the shade garden is so lovely -- you'll want a snapshot from there. They have hosted a lot of really cool events there, so be sure to check their calendar. Very dedicated staff who love to talk caves!

Horse Cave (Hidden river cave) was out of business for decades due to pollution and now they are trying to make a comeback. This was a very laid-back and informative tour, given by a man who is obviously trying to re-build this once famous cave, (the entire town was built and named for it). They have a ways to go, however, as they seem to be struggling for money, and certain parts of the museum need updating. The tour itself is about an hour long and actually only goes a couple of city blocks in length. There is a steep staircase leading into the cave, but hey, it's a cave. They are working on gaining permission to cross the railroad right-of-way (yes, they have underground rights of way). If and when they can do this, they will be able to open up the entire cave to visitors, which will more than triple the existing tour, and then I believe they will really have something special on their hands. The history behind the cave, the roaring underground river and the 100 year old artifacts still inside the cave make it more than a worthwhile side trip while in cave country.
